History unfolds as WW2 cruiser USS Houston sunken wreckage was unravel by US navy and Indonesian divers in the Java Sea. This was confirmed by the divers. The cruiser was the final resting place for about 700 sailors and Marines.

During the battle of Sunda Strait, the Japanese sank the USS Houston on February 28, 1942.

The ship carried over a thousand crewmen, but only 291 sailors and Marines survived both the attack and the threat being war prisoners.

"The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast" is the nickname of the USS Houston.  The Houston's commanding officer, Captain Albert H Rooks, retrospectively received the Medal of Honor for astonishing intrepidness.

Admiral Harry Harris, Commander of US Pacific Fleet said that the divers have documented evidence the watery gravesite has been disturbed.

In a statement, Admiral Harry Harris said that together with the Indonesian Navy partners, they share the sense of responsibility to safeguard the USS Houston and other gravesites.  In surveying the site, it was the only way in associating to respect the sailors who made the vital sacrifice to ensure the liberty and security that are richly enjoyed today.

In June, valuations had been directed to determine the condition of the USS Houston. It was found that exterior rivets, a metal plate and unexploded artillery were removed from the ship. There is also oil actively seeping from the hull.

The Navy History and Heritage Command decided that all of the recorded data is dependable with the identification of the former USS Houston.

The USS Houston was nicknamed the "The Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast." Resting in the west coast of Java, Indonesia, the ship, which remains sovereign property of the United States, is a popular recreational dive site, the Navy said.

Globally, the Navy estimated that there are over 17,000 sunken ships and aircrafts resting on the ocean floor.

As the USS Houston has been recently discovered, this will be additional antiquity of the United States of America as other historical details unfold.
