Federal Judge Sentences Irina Walker Over Oregon Cockfighting Enterprise Involvement

On Wednesday, Irina Walker was given a sentence of three-year probation by the federal judge for her involvement in an Oregon cockfighting enterprise. Walker is a princess and is fifth in line of succession to the headship of the Romanian Royal Family.

In July, Irina Walker and her husband John pleaded guilty for operating an illegal gambling business in Oregon. Her Husband, John Walker is a former sheriff's deputy and was also sentenced to probation by US District Judge Michael Mosman.

According to The Huffington Post, Romanian Princess Irina Walker said the illegal cockfighting business had brought shame to her and her family.

"I'm very sorry about my involvement in this business," Irina Walker told the federal judge. "It was not my intention to go against the law."

IOL News reported that as part of the plea agreement, the Walkers agreed to sell real estate and pay $200,000 to the government. The judge also consented to let the Walkers travel internationally during their probation after their lawyers said the 93-year-old Romanian king has health problems and Irina wanted to pay him a visit while he is still alive.

Irina Walker is the 61-year-old daughter of former Romanian King Michael I, who was forced to resign by the communists in 1947.

As stated by The Guardian, Irina Walker and her husband were arrested in 2013 after authorities discovered they had staged at least 10 cockfighting derbies in a barn at their ranch in Oregon. The couple reportedly charged watchers $20 to watch roosters with knives attached to their legs fight to death.

Because of the illegal Oregon cockfighting business, the Walkers drew crowds generally which exceeded 100 people and the couple also made money from the sale of alcohol. Authorities said attendees paid $1,000 to enter the fights. And the prizes ranged from $10,000 to $18,000. The person whose roosters won the most matches took home the money, except for the 10 percent kept by the referees.

More than a dozen other people were indicted in the case. Everyone else pleaded guilty either in Oregon or Washington State. Irina Walker moved to the United States from Switzerland in the early 1980s with her former husband John Kreuger.
