While more salacious news comes out about Bobby Petrino, Arkansas is still without a head football coach. The school fired Petrino on Tuesday after it found out the messy details of his relationship with Arkansas employee Jessica Dorrell.
According to the online sportsbook Bovada, Guz Malzahn is the leading candidate to land the job. Bovada has given the current Arkansas State head coach 5/2 odds of becoming the next coach of the Razorbacks.
Malzahn played for Arkansas in the 1980's, and wouldn't have to move very far to make the change. He was Auburn's offensive coordinator for the past three years, and is being rumored to be the next Razorbacks head coach, despite not having coached a game at his latest job.
He told an Arkansas radio station that he is focused on coaching Arkansas State.
"I'm the coach at Arkansas State. I'm not worried about anything else. I'm committed to being here."
Garrick McGee is listed as the second favorite to get the job, at 3/1. He became the Arkansas quarterback coach in 2008, and was the team's offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Four months ago, he took the head coaching job at UAB.
McGee is already practicing with his new team. He has refused to address the possibility of leaving to take the gig at Arkansas.
Bovada puts the odds of Skip Holtz taking over for Petrino at 7/2. The South Florida head football coach has been rumored to be in the running for the job, despite recent struggles in the Big East. USF went just 5-7 last season. Holtz's father, Lou, coached at Arkansas, but his 13-12 record in two seasons with the Bulls makes it hard for him to be higher than third on this list.
Like the other potential candidates, Holtz says he wants to stay at his current place of employment.
