Dartmouth Hard Alcohol: Dartmouth Bans Hard Alcohol, Pledging And Hazing On Campus

Dartmouth Hard Alcohol - Dartmouth College authorities have announced new reforms that effectively bans all students - regardless of their age - from drinking or possessing hard alcohol on campus.

Dartmouth President Philip J. Hanlon made the announcement of the cultural changes on Thursday morning in a speech to students, staff and faculty.

The changes, which will see the creation of new residential communities to enhance students' social interactions, comes after recent federal investigations into allegations of sexual assault, fraternity hazing and high-risk drinking in colleges across the country.

The changes were reportedly influenced by the findings of the 'Moving Dartmouth Forward' committee created in 2013 by Hanlon to study the problems faced by the Ivy League school.

Dartmouth, a New Hampshire school, is part of the 95 schools under the investigation of federal authorities for the way the school authorities handled cases of violence and sexual harassment relating to fraternity hazing.

Philip Hanlon has several changes planned out including a Dartmouth hard alcohol ban - students on campus cannot have drinks with 30% proof or higher. Hanlon also announced plans to close pledge or probationary periods for student groups and implement a compulsory four year sexual violence prevention program.

"Our aspirations will never be realized if we fail to address a vital component: the environment in which our students live and learn," Hanlon said. "We must recognize a moment in time when change is necessary in order to reach our potential, and now is such a moment."

Cases of sexual assault on college campuses across the country have received media attention in recent months. This has forced the government to call for stricter policies and equally stronger enforcement of the policies aimed at curbing these incidents.

"Colleges and universities across the county face the issue I've detailed today," Hanlon said. "We are not alone in facing them, but we will take the lead in saying, 'No more' ".
