Xiaomi Invades The Brazilian Market

In an unprecedented move, Xiaomi will conquer Brazil as a new market outside Asia.

CNN reported that Xiaomi phones sold in Brazil will be manufactured locally in partnership with Taiwan-based company Foxconn. A Chinese company, Xiaomi, has launched its Redmi 2 on Tuesday in Sao Paulo, and it is expected to hit stores at 499 Brazilian real ($160) on July 7. Fitness bands, portable mobile chargers and other Xiaomi products will also be available.

Xiaomi Vice-President Hugo Barra said, "I strongly believe that Redmi 2 will be a game-changer in the Brazilian market, offering consumers a quality option never seen before in this price category."

He also added that this is just the beginning of their journey. As their business in Brazil progresses, Brazilian consumers can expect more variety of Xiaomi products.

Competition among the Chinese smartphone industry is tough, with Huawei ranking among the top smartphone makers. CNET said that this Chinese giant has unveiled another flagship unit, the Honor 7, which will sell for 1,999 Chinese yuan or around $323, and the company expects to sell 40 million units.

Xiaomi considers Brazil as a strategic move as it keeps an eye on emerging consumer markets. NDTV said that the Chinese tech giant is slowly inching its way in from the edges of a tough market dominated by more popular brands like Apple and Samsung. NDTV also added that Brazil's smartphone market is at a tipping point, as more users are swapping their simple phones for the more sophisticated smartphones with more features, to meet the demands of their developing lifestyle.

Founded in 2010, the Beijing-based company quickly rose into the ranks of top smartphone manufacturers in China, with their affordable products creating a mass following. Xiaomi's investment in Latin America is just one of the major steps towards its global ambitions. Last year, they sold over 61 million handheld devices.
