James Jones Signs Contract With Giants; Ditches Eagles’ Offer Among Others

James Jones, an NFL veteran wide receiver, has finally signed a one-year contract with the New York Giants on July 30. The announcement came on Friday after shopping his services around the league in June.

James Jones, the 31-year-old and 9-year veteran, chose the offer of the Giants over those from the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals. According to NFL.com, Jones seemed to have a hard time in leaving Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, after they spent seven years together in Green Bay Packers.

In March 2014, James Jones signed an $11.3 million contract with Oakland Raiders. However, he only lasted for a year in the three-year contract and was released following the 2015 NFL Draft in early May, SB Nation revealed.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles were one of the few teams who made offers to James Jones this offseason. But the offer with Jones appeared quite interesting considering the circumstances that the Eagles already had first round pick Nelson Agholor in the fold while Miles Austin can also fill the role so they didn't really need another veteran wide receiver.

Currently, the Eagles have 12 wide receivers under contract including Jordan Matthews, Riley Cooper, Josh Huff, Nelson Agholor, Miles Austin, Seyi Ajirotutu, Jeff Maehl, Quron Pratt, Rasheed Bailey, Devante Davis, John Harris and G.J. Kinne. However, only the first six names are most likely to make the final roster.

James Jones' contract signing with the Giants came after the team has been looking up potential additions to its receiving forces since Victor Cruz is still recovering from a torn patellar tendon injury, NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk noted.

Last year, James Jones had 73 catches for 666 yards and six touchdowns in Oakland. And during his seven years with the Packers, he had 310 catches for 4,305 yards and 37 touchdowns.

In other news, Tom Brady's lawsuit on the Deflategate controversy is still making headlines around the NFL realm.
