Honda Has Recalled 2.2 Million Cars – Takata Corporation Airbag Problems

Honda, one of the biggest carmakers in Japan, has recently recalled 2.2 million cars. These cars are equipped with the potentially defective airbags made by Takata Corporation.

These airbags have the possibility of rupturing, causing fatal injuries to the drivers of Honda cars. The recall worsens the airbag scandal that the Takata Corporation is currently embroiled in.

The massive recall issued by the American Honda Motor co. was published on a car safety website for consumers on Wednesday. It was through the auspices of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The announcement specifies Honda car models from 2005 and some cars made in 2016.

"The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture," the recall notice said.

The vehicles are being recalled so that the Japanese automaker can replace the problematic Takata PSDI-5 driver-side inflators. On Monday, the company also recalled some 269,000 like models in Canada because of the same problem.

About two weeks ago, Takata Corporation told the NHTSA that around 3.9 milion PSDI-5 inflators bought by various car makers has the potential to rupture, kill, or cause major injury to car occupants. Honda's recent recall announcement is included in Takata's count.

The Japanese automaker also added that it is issuing a recall of 341,000 Accords because of a different issue. Apparently, the 2008 to 2010 model of Accords have problem with their electronic control units that could cause the airbags from deploying when needed. These units are used in the car's supplemental restraint system.

The recall documents specified that the vehicles are equipped with the Takata made airbags. Takata Corporation was previously ordered to pay a fine of $200 million last year for concealing the safety issues of its airbags linking them to the 10 deaths and scores of injuries to others.
