If you are scheduled for a job interview, you need to be prepared for any surprise question that the interviewer may throw at you. Don't let one question get you off-guard because you might just let out words in your mouth that may make or break your chances of nailing the job.
One difficult question to answer, as proven by surveys of job seekers who went in for job interviews is this: "When did you go against company policy?"
There are several reasons why HR interviewers ask this question. One reason may be the interviewer would like to see how you react to a negative question. Another reason may be that the interviewer would like to see how you handle yourself when faced with a difficult situation.
Don't ever think that this is a positive question where you can show your ability to turn a negative situation into a positive one. It is a trick question that is designed to trap you and see what mettle you are made of.
The best way to handle this question is to be frank, honest and straightforward. Don't be careless with your words, and don't say anything that will put your character in a bad light.
Whenever you are asked this question, don't give any information than what is necessary. Answer the question concisely ending your answer on a positive note. This will take some practice though but if you prepare hard enough, you will get through the question unscathed.
You can also try turning back the question to the interviewer by saying "I've never really experienced going against company policy, but is that a practice that you encourage here?"
But the point is to answer this type of question as honest and as concise as you can, and give the impression that you are not even slightly disturbed by the question.
