Charlie Hunnam Replaced By Scott Eastwood In 'Pacific Rim 2?'

Scott Eastwood may be joining John Boyega in "Pacific Rim 2." Apparently, the "Suicide Squad" actor is in "early talks" for the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 sci-fi action film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Eastwood could be a part of the highly-anticipated "Pacific Rim 2." "Star Wars" star John Boyega, who will portray Idris Elba's character's son, has already been confirmed for the sequel.

The news comes after Scott Eastwood has been confirmed to join F. Gary Gray's "Fast 8." He will be making an appearance this year on Aug. 5 in director David Ayer and Warner Bros.' anti-hero superhero movie "Suicide Squad."

Steven S. DeKnight, who was the showrunner for "Spartacus" and "Daredevil" season 1, will be directing "Pacific Rim 2." Guillermo del Toro and his partner Femi Oguns will be the executive producers of the film along with Thomas Tull and Mary Parent of Legendary Entertainment.

"Pacific Rim 2" is slated for release on Feb. 23, 2018. The news of Scott Eastwood joining the sequel led to speculations that the "Suicide Squad" actor will be taking over the lead role which was previously portrayed by "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam.

Collider reported that the upcoming sequel could take place "a considerable time after the events of "Pacific Rim." This would explain the absence of the majority of the characters, such as Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, from the original film.

Movie News Guide noted that Charlie Hunnam's return for "Pacific Rim 2" is still uncertain. There is the possibility that he will reprise his role but it is highly likely that he won't take the lead this time.

It was rumored that Hunnam's character, Raleigh Becket, may serve as the mentor of John Boyega's character in the sequel.

"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox," del Toro said about John Boyega. "The 'Pacific Rim' universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job."
