"Attack on Titan" will not only have a second season in 2017, it will also have a stage play adaptation in the same year. The stage production, entitled "Live Impact Attack on Titan," is set to open in summer while the much-awaited second season is set for release in April.
Kodansha Editor Shintaro Kawakubo (aka Back) took credit for the idea behind the play. He was quoted by Crunchyroll saying, "I have launched this project with a permission from (Hajime) Isayama-san. I will take full responsibility to make it good. I want to produce it somewhat different from the previous stageplays based on manga." Anime Tokyo also took note of his promise to make this "a special experience you can enjoy with all five senses."
To get the ball rolling, the official website for the stage play was launched on December 9, two days after the launch of the official fan site for the series. Isayama's hit manga series is known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese. It is about the struggles of men against giants who eat humans. This gritty dark story has lead to various spin-offs and adaptations, including a number of full-length animated and live-action films. The first season of the animated series was released in 2013, making the second season release a much-anticipated event by fans worldwide.
The hit manga series, Attack on Titan, started on print in 2009 serializing in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. Kodansha releases the English version in Japan while Crunchyroll streams the English-dubbed series online for the United States. Kodansha released volume 20 also on Dec. 9 coinciding with the launch of the website for the stage play.
