'Marco Polo' Cancellation: Netflix Finally Decides On Fate Of Original Series; What Happens To Season 3?

It is a sad day for "Marco Polo" fans who have been looking forward to the return of the original Netflix series. Netflix decided to end "Marco Polo" after two seasons comprised of 10 episodes each, Variety reported. There were speculations that the series was too expensive for Netflix to sustain.

The cast, crew and creative team of "Marco Polo" have already bid their farewells to fans after the show streamed for two seasons. The second season started and ended in 2016, two years after "Marco Polo" started streaming.

"Marco Polo" is one of the ambitious series that Netflix released. Unfortunately, Netflix put a lid on the expensive project. "Marco Polo" joins some Netflix original series that got canned like "Lillyhammer," "Hemlock Grove," and "Bloodline."

Jobs & Hire previously reported that Netflix was thinking about selling "Marco Polo" to HBO. However, it appears that the two companies did not reach an agreement, resulting in the end of "Marco Polo."

"Marco Polo" featured an Italian explorer played by Lorenzo Richelmy and Kublai Khan played by Benedict Wong. Production has been costly, with Season 1 expenses reportedly hitting $90 million.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the decision of Netflix to stop streaming "Marco Polo" was due to a $200 million loss. Netflix and The Weinstein Co. decided to not go for a third season of "Marco Polo," becoming the first original series that did not reach a third season.

"Marco Polo" was reportedly popular in Asia and Europe, but Netflix and The Weinstein Co. executives had to discuss what to do with the series after the loss. No word yet from Netflix regarding the future of some of its series, "The Get Down," "Easy," and "Between."
