Here Are The Things That You Should Never Say To Your Office Friends

The workplace is where a lot of friendships are made, and forming a connection with one’s co-workers seems to be inevitable since professionals spend most of their waking hours at work. But sometimes, people forget to be professional because of these friendships, and some things that have been said can cause the relationship to turn sour.

Here are the things that you should never, ever say to your office friends.

“How much do you get paid?”

According to Rosalinda Oropeza Randall, an etiquette and civility expert and the author of “Don’t Burp in the Boardroom” (via Business Insider), this question is not only unprofessional but awkward.

“Why do you want to know? Will you complain to your boss if you find it inequitable?” said Randall. “Or will you speak to your boss on your co-worker’s behalf insisting they get a raise?”

“Are you pregnant?” or “When are you getting pregnant?”

This is none of your business. If your office friend is not pregnant, then you’ve just succeeded in insulting her. You should also never ask a recently-married workplace friend if she plans to get pregnant, as it is not a topic that is fit for discussion anywhere.

“Can I borrow your lipstick/mascara/hair brush/deodorant?”

Even the closest of siblings may opt not to share makeup or hygiene products, so why should you expect your co-worker to share these things with you? Bring your own hygiene or cosmetic kit to the office and use your own things.

“Can I borrow some money?”

If you constantly ask your office friend to spot you five dollars or if you always claim to have “forgotten” your wallet, expect not to get invited to future coffee breaks.

“I am so sick of this place.”

Constantly saying that you hate your job will have an adverse effect in the workplace, as it can demoralize your office friends. Moreover, they might start to avoid you because of all the negativity that you’re spreading in the office. If you must vent, save it for a parent, a significant other, or another friend who doesn’t work with you.
