Police authorities reported on Monday that a 32-year-old mother and her two young children were seriously hurt after a car plowed into them at a bus stop near USC in University Village. The young children, 1 and 3 years old, have suffered critical injuries and in serious condition.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Brian Humphrey reported the unidentified driver had crashed into the mother and her two young children while they were at the bus stop at the northwest corner of Vermont Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard. According to The Los Angeles Times, the accident happened on Monday afternoon near the USC campus.

In line with the incident, traffic collisions and accidents are critical global issues that that society has been facing today. It may often lead to death and disability of the individuals involved. There are several factors that contribute to the risk of vehicular accidents and collisions which include vehicle and road design, speed of operation, road environment, driver skill or impairment and the behavior of the driver.

Based on the latest Global Status Report on Road Safety published by the World Health Organization, the data showed that almost all high-income nations have decreasing death tolls while the majority of low-income countries have increasing road deaths. Nevertheless, middle-income nations are considered to be struck the hardest. As stated by WHO, Africa has the highest death rate whereas Europe has the lowest.

On a 1995 report based on British and American crash data, it was discovered that driver error, intoxication and other human factors contribute wholly or partly to about 93 percent of the accidents.

Due to the global and massive scale of the issue on traffic collisions and accidents, the United Nations and its subsidiary bodies have passed resolutions and held conferences on the matter. It was predicted that by 2020, road traffic deaths and injuries will exceed HIV/AIDS as a burden of death and disability.

Meanwhile, the driver of the car that struck a mother and her children at a bus top near USC has not been injured during the crash. However, NBC Los Angeles reported the three victims were taken to the hospital for immediate treatment of their injuries.

The authorities are investigating the scene where a late-'90s Nissan Sentra car plowed into a bus stop near USC and crashed into a mother and her two young children. As of the moment, ABC 7 stated that the cause of the accident has not been determned though according to Los Angeles police Officer Drake Madison, the investigation into the collision remained ongoing.

The victims, a mother and her children that were hit by a car at a USC bus stop, are still currently under observation and being treated at the hospital.

Because of the rising traffic collision incidents, WHO predicts that by 2030, the road traffic injuries will increase and become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide.
