If you have the feeling that you are being watched and tracked whenever you are on Facebook, your senses are telling you right.

Ever notice the ad that just popped up on the page you're on, or the two new articles appearing suddenly on your feed that are eerily just like what you have just checked on? That's watching and tracking at its best, Facebook folks.

If you have been a long-time user of Facebook, you will also feel that it knows you intimately, because it sure does. This social media giant uses algorithms that have the capacity to track what you watch, what you like and everything, and that means everything that you click on.

This information is passed on by this social media network to its advertisers. And that's where it earns its keeps - which are really very, very humongous. But the thing is: you have been a big part of it - without your knowledge.

But now you know, so what can you do about it? If it's OK with you to be tracked in everything that you do on Facebook, then just leave it like that.

But if you're normal, which are what most people are even if they are modern ones, you want to keep your privacy private, right?

So, here are the most practical and immediate things you can do right now. These tips will make Facebook work harder to keep its eyes and ears on your activities while you're using its social media network.

The primary thing you need to do is to check your Facebook profile and change your settings. Here is how this is done:

  • Review the installed apps, and edit anything that you think will give away your privacy. Open Facebook, go to the upper right corner and click the down arrow and select "Settings" and then click on the "Apps" header in the left column.
  • Click the pencils icons next to the individual apps to see their settings. Edit anything that gives away your privacy.
  • Set the first setting to default which should be "Only Me."
