It's every manager's nightmare. How do you keep employees around and stay longer?

Sometimes a thicker paycheque and happy work environment with multiple perks can only be effective in the short run. But what about the long run? According to Business News, a recent study conducted by Cornerstone OnDemand saw employees' perception of career satisfaction. In addition, the researchers also found their perception of a work-life balance. Ultimately, the study has found that employees are willing to make sacrifices in order to get that fulfillment in their career life.

The survey was conducted with a group of 2,000 full-time Americans ages 18 and above, and 546 HR managers. The study found that 89% of employees would consider a lateral career move, 77% are willing to relocate and 55% are willing to change careers. In the end, they found that it's purpose and not perks that drive employees to stay loyal to a company.

Career satisfaction is essential to employees and employers. In today's modern time, it is an indicator of a dramatic changing workforce. Kim Cassady, the VP of Talent for Cornerstone On Demand, notes that employees don't have a problem leaving a company that no longer suits their personal and career goals.

Cassady's advice for employers is to stay ahead and adapt to the changes by creating visibility into their employees' career trajectories. Look at what drives their professional and personal satisfaction. They can do this by engaging with their employees. The key is to listen to their staff and workers, and understand their personal goals.

"Employees are the frontline advocates for any organization, they truly make or break a business," says Kirsten Helvey, CEO of Cornerstone OnDemand.

Both authorities have expressed that it is important for employers to understand what motivates their employees.
