The "Warcraft" movie has earned $31 million in the box office for its overseas debut. The video game adaptation was released last week in different countries.
Forbes reported that the "Warcraft" movie had a "promising start" internationally. The Legendary/Universal/Comcast Corp. film, which had a budget of $160 million, earned $31.6 million in the first five days of its release in 20 markets.
The "Warcraft" movie box office earnings surpassed "Alice Through the Looking Glass." It also gained $2.1 million in 73 IMAX theaters.
It opened with $10 million in Russia, becoming the second biggest debut of 2016 after "Deadpool." The "Warcraft" movie earned $5.9 million in Germany and $4.5 million in France.
Jones' film nabbed the fourth-biggest opening weekend for Universal in Sweden with $1.2 million for its debut. It also topped the charts in Austria, Denmark, Egypt, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Latvia, Lebanon, Middle East, Norway, Pakistan, Slovenia, Switzerland, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.
The "Warcraft" movie stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. It is directed and written by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, and co-written by Charles Leavitt.
According to Deadline, the "Warcraft" movie earned $9.3 million through Thursday which increased to $16.3 million on Friday. Over the next two months, the film will still go through 45 markets including China.
MNG noted, however, that the "Warcraft" movie's box office performance is still considered moderate. It also fell short of the film's hefty budget.
There are speculations that the film's mild U.S. reception is due to the less-than-stellar reviews of critics. It is believed that the movie would lag behind "The Conjuring 2," "Now You See Me 2" as well as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles: Out of the Shadows."
The "Warcraft" movie's performance in the international market definitely helped. It is highly likely that sales will rise even further when it debuts in more markets.
