It's a competitive corporate world out there. Set yourself apart from the pack by making sure that you make a good impression during a job interview.

The Muse listed down things that applicants should not say or do during a job interview. These are things that may seem harmless or trivial but can actually score you negative points.

One of the most damaging things that applicants forget to do is to neglect their research. Walking into an interview unprepared will not help your cause at all. Show how much you want the job by doing your homework on the company's culture and how you can contribute to its collective goal.

Although this might be common sense, some applicants still commit the faux pas of ranting about their previous company and boss to recruiters. No matter how horrible your past experience was, your words can actually be taken against you. Focus, instead, on what you have learned from it and how it helped you improve.

Also, don't show how nervous you are. Give yourself a pep talk by turning your attention to your achievements and why you're the perfect fit for the job. Don't fuss about what the recruiter's reaction might be since it's not in your control.

Another overused response is "Perfectionism is my greatest weakness." Honesty and sincerity still goes a long way. Being genuine about what you need to improve on what you're doing about it also shows how self-aware you are.

Pop Sugar also advised against making up something to make yourself look good. Moreover, you could contribute to your own undoing by slipping up.

The publication noted that wearing the right outfit will gain a favorable impression for you. Bring copies of your resume as well and place it in a sturdy folder to keep it crease-free.

Never be late but don't be too early either. Being five to 10 minutes early for a job interview is the ideal.
