There have been rumors circulating that a "Marvel VS Capcom 4" is in the works and is likely to be released in 2017. Unfortunately for fans of the game, it's highly unlikely they'll see a "Marvel VS Capcom 4" game anytime soon.

According to The Fighters Generation, there are three images that have been making rounds on the Internet that are pointing to a "Marvel VS Capcom 4" game. One of the images even mentions that the game would be released on 2017.

The game is supposed to be revealed during PlayStation Experience, scheduled on December 3 and 4. But fans shouldn't be rejoicing just yet as the three images are just screaming that they are fake.

Capcom's Yoshinori Ono, who recently said that they will be supporting Street Fighter V into 2020, also stated that the company will likely not work on any new franchise for a while. Capcom's Ryota Niitsuma also tweeted a couple of months back that, though he would love to make a "Marvel VS Capcom 4" game, "nothing's happening on that front."

Furthermore, a 2017release of "Marvel VS Capcom 4" seemed too soon for the game, considering the reasons why "Marvel VS Capcom 3" took 11 years to replace "Marvel VS Capcom 2." A 2018 or 2019 release would have been more believable.

GameRant reports that part of the delay in the release of "Marvel VS Capcom 3" was the game's shift from 2D to 3D. But that kind of technical change wouldn't really take more than a decade to resolve.

The likely reason the game took too long to release was that licensing took too long to complete. There are just a lot of characters included in a game like "Marvel VS Capcom," so a lot of negotiation in terms of licensing the characters included in the crossover likely took a while.

And with Marvel's recent success, licensing top characters to be part of "Marvel VS Capcom 4" would probably be harder this time around. This is probably the biggest reason why the fourth installment of the popular fighting game is likely to happen anytime soon.

For those who are still hoping, the PlayStation Experience event on December 3 and 4 will likely confirm or squash the rumors. For a lot of the game's fans, here's hoping the rumors are true.
