The "2017 Breakthrough Prize" or more known as "The Science Oscars" is both star-studded and innovator-studded. Innovators, inventors and geniuses in the event are mixed together with Hollywood's biggest stars creating a juxtaposition that actors are not the real stars but scientists should shine more. Twelve winners have been selected and will split apart a $25m grant involving huge development in fields such as cancer cure developments, theoretical physics and astronomical transformative contributions.
According to SiliconRepublic.com, Facebook Founder and Owner Mark Zuckerberg said "there has never been a more important time to support science." He said that the 2017 Breakthrough Prize Laureates are leaders in scientific research and development in physics, math and life sciences. The event was to help encourage the unlocking of new possibilities that can help improve the quality of life on Earth.
According to Wired.com, the event was held in a makeshift hangar in the NASA Ames Research Center and had celebrity admirers of scientific geniuses present, such as "Triple X" and "Fast and Furious" star Vin Diesel. Diesel said, "I hope being here is a demonstration, or statement, to all future scientists that their cinematic heroes think they are heroes."
Winners from the Life Sciences are Stephen Elledge, Harry F Noller, Roeland Nusse, Yoshinori Ohsumi and Huda Yahya Zogbhi. Winners from the Special Fundamental Physics Sciences are Ronald Drever, Kip Thorne and Rainer Weiss. Jean Bourgain is the sole winner for Mathematical Sciences and the Breakthrough Prize winners in Fundamental Physics include Joseph Polchinski, Andrew Strominger and Cumrun Vafa.
Dr Elledge had found that eukaryotic cells sense and respond to danger in their DNA suggesting it has a correlation to its reaction to cancer cells. Dr. Noller connected RNA to the protein-synthesis center Ribosome. Fundamental Physics winners have advanced knowledge in Quantum Field Theory, String Theory and Quantum Gravity. Special Breakthrough Winners in Fundamental Physics have expanded the understanding of gravitational waves -- a crucial subject in Astronomy.
These scientific advances could vastly improve the understanding of the currently known universe. The funding will help improve the innovations and scientific advances of the winners. Scientists are definitely an important group of individuals else the world would not have known this magnetic field crack existed.
