March is Women’s History Month, and female historical figures are being honored all throughout the month. In addition to these intrepid women, it also seems fitting to pay tribute to the women who have made their mark in the beauty industry, as they deserve to be lauded for their vision, innovation, and for their initiatives to create products that are not only affordable but are designed for women of all races across the globe.

According to Bustle, it may seem like women run the beauty industry upon first glance. However, the CEOs of major beauty companies such as L’Oreal, Revlon, Estée Lauder, and MAC Cosmetics are all men, which means that these tycoons are basically running the $50 billion beauty industry. That’s why for Women’s History Month, it’s important to know which beauty brands are run by women in order to support them for all their efforts to make beauty products accessible and affordable to women of all over the world.

Here are the best female-owned beauty brands to support this month.

The Lip Bar

Last year, entrepreneurs Melissa Butler and Roscoe Spears appeared on “Shark Tank” in hopes of getting an investor on their colorful lipstick line called The Lip Bar. However, their idea was mocked and one of the “Sharks” even said that the ladies would be “crushed like the colorful cockroaches” that they are by larger brands should they try to get women to buy their unusual lip colors.

Though they did not get a “Shark,” Butler and Spears were able to prove them wrong as they now have a mobile boutique and have traveled to New York, Toronto, Detroit, and Washington, D.C., among others. Their products are also available on the Target website.

Honest Beauty

Co-founded by actress Jessica Alba, the company specializes in cosmetics that are free of harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, and sulfates.

Nuance

The company was founded by actress Salma Hayek. From skincare to makeup to hair products, Hayek’s products have been raved about by beauty experts for their great quality and affordable prices. All her products are available at CVS and are available at under $20.

Circa

This makeup line is directed by Eva Mendes and is available at Walgreens. Just like Hayek’s products, everything is below $20.

Iman Cosmetics

Founded by supermodel Iman, the line is very much a makeup fan favorite as it has a wide range of makeup shades to fit a wide range of skin tones. Iman cosmetics was also the first to come out with a BB cream specifically for darker skin tones. According to Buzzfeed, the supermodel was once told that “black women don’t buy foundation,” and this encouraged her to make her own line and sell it to public.
