Age discrimination, or ageism, is one of the problems that employees are facing in workplaces all over the world. Seasoned workers are being replaced with younger and more inexperienced employees, as companies know that they can pay new hires less than what their older workers are making.

While some older workers have come to accept this as a natural way of life, others are fighting back as they have every intention of staying on in their jobs. If you feel that you are being discriminated by your co-workers and higher-ups, there are several things that you can do to deal with ageism in the workplace.

Prove that you’re an asset to the company by learning something new

Young employees may be well-versed on technology, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be on the same level. You can take software lessons or seminars to know more, or even sign up for online classes. This way, you’re kept up to date on the technology and at par with the younger workers.

Maintain your health

One of the reasons why older workers get edged out of the picture is because some are showing declining signs of health. So take action and improve your health by eating the right kind of foods, exercising, and have a check-up at least once a year.

Don’t let it get you down

Remain enthusiastic and positive when it comes to your job. Show up at work on time, greet everyone with a smile, and keep a positive attitude. People who are a positive influence in the workplace can serve as a good example to everyone else, and your managers will see that younger workers can certainly learn something from you.

Raise the issue

If you are a victim of age discrimination, you have every right to raise the issue in your workplace. Make a report by gathering evidence which can include insulting comments from higher ups or co-workers. It’s even better if you have witnesses to support your claims.
