13 Pounds Baby Born: Colorado Parents And Hospital Staff Surprised At Weight Of Big Baby

13 pounds baby born - Doctors and midwives were heavily surprised after a southern Colorado mother gave birth to a baby who neatly tipped the scale - weighing about 14 pounds.

Local sources say baby Mia Yasmin Garcia was born on Monday Dec. 4th by C-section at the San Luis Valley Health Hospital. She was 22 inches long and weighed 13 pounds, 13 ounces.

Her parents Alisha Hernandez and Francisco Garcia of Monte Vista say the 13 pounds baby born was not due until Wednesday. Her mother Alisha said according to the doctors, she was to deliver a 7-pound baby.

Reports indicate that shortly after the 13 pounds baby was born she had to be flown to the Colorado Children's Hospital in Autora because she had difficulty breathing and suffered from low glucose levels. As at Thursday, the baby was stabilized and would be discharged next week. Alisha is also doing well.

The doctors, nurses and midwifes were surprised to see the 13 pounds, 13 ounces baby born at their hospital. Officials say Mia is the biggest newborn to be treated in the hospital's history.

Her father Garcia said he was shocked at Mia's size, adding that she had four older sisters who did not weigh normally at birth. According to him, the hospital staff were as surprised as he was.

"They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that. Even in the San Luis Valley, they were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they've never seen a baby like that," Garcia said.

Garcia and Alisha said that Mia was the 13 pounds baby born is their last child, although they had tried to have a boy.

Reports indicate that the 13 pounds baby is not the biggest child to be born in the US. In 2013, a baby was born in Utah weighing 14lb. According to the Guinness Book of Records, Anna Bates holds the record as the heaviest baby ever born. Anna weighed 23-pounds and was born in 1879.
