Israel Acid Attack: A View Of Terror Amidst Heightened Israeli-Palestinian Tensions

On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported an acid attack to a Jewish family near a checkpoint in Jerusalem. According to the authorities, a Palestinian attacker tossed acid at them when they stopped to pick up an Israeli hitchhiker. The victims, which included young girls, suffered from light to moderate injuries.

The Israel acid attack occurred on Route 60 between Jerusalem and Bethlehem, near the Betar Ilit settlement, Haaretz reported. The report said a Palestinian man poured acid on a family in the West Bank on Friday in an alleged terrorist attack.

The Palestinian attacker was identified as 45-year-old Jamal Abd al-Majid Ghayatha from the village of Nahalin. From 2004-2007, authorities said the perpetrator was imprisoned in Israel for Islamic Jihad-linked activities. According to Magen David Adom emergency services, the attacker had a moderate gunshot wound after an Israeli civilian struck Ghayatha with his car and then shot him.

The victims, who included a 27-year-old man, another man in his 50s, a 52-year-old woman and three girls, aged 11, 12 and 18, were all treated by Magen David Adom paramedics. The older man was taken to Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem, while the rest were taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Following the acid attack, an Israel Defense Forces officer said that the assailant also attempted to attack bystanders with a screwdriver, The Washington Post reported.

The Friday's acid attack in Israel came amidst heightened tensions between Palestinians and Israelis, particularly in the West Bank and Jerusalem. According to Yahoo! News, the territories were seized in a 1967 war and Palestinians wanted an independent state alongside Gaza.

The attack also underscored the intensified crisis after a senior Palestinian politician died Wednesday after a confrontation with Israeli border police forces at a nonviolent protest in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

In recent weeks, Israelis have faced a series of attacks including stabbings. On Monday, CNN reported a Palestinian teenage girl with a knife assaulted an Israeli man in the West Bank.

The latest Israel acid attack is one in a slew of violent spells in the region since October. In the hostilities, 10 Israelis and a foreign visitor have been killed by Palestinians in knife or car-based attacks. At least a dozen Palestinians have also been killed, including most of those who executed the carnages.
