International Living, a media company specializing in retirement abroad, ranked 25 nations for its annual Global Retirement Index. NBC News reported Ecuador may be the world's best place to retire but it got relatively weak scores for infrastructure and healthcare. However, Ecuador earned perfect scores for climate and for the comfort of buying or renting property.

Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in northwestern South America. It is bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Quito is the nation's capital city and its official language is Spanish, which is spoken by 94 percent of its population. Ecuador is a presidential republic with a motto of "Dios, Patria y Libertad" in Spanish, which is "God, Homeland and Freedom" in English.

Because of its diversity, Ecuador coveted the top spot as this year's best place to retire in the world. According to Huffington Post, Ecuador offers the best value in real estate, the cost of living in the country is low and its government provided a generous array of benefits to retirees aged over 65, which include discounts on flights originating in Ecuador, 50 percent off entry to movies and sporting events. A 50 percent discounts are also available on public transport and utilities.

According to Forbes, other top retirement havens include nations in Central America, Europe, Asia and South America, all of which are placed where one can "live comfortably, make friends, stay busy and give back."

"The world's top retirement havens for 2015 may dot the landscape from Asia to Latin America to Europe, but they share certain assets," International Living executive editor Jennifer Stevens said, as reported by The Daily Mail. "They're safe, offer good value and are places you can settle with relative ease."
