Detroit Man Who Walks To Work Feels Overwhelmed By Over $160,000 Donations: Will James Robertson Finally Get A Ride?

A Detroit man, who walks more than 20 miles per day to work, has inspired many people in the United States. His story has gone viral and sparked social media reactions that resulted to a donation drive, which aims to provide for his transportation needs.

The story of James Robertson, the man who walks about 21 miles a day to and from work, was revealed by Bill Laitner and was published in the Sunday edition of Detroit Free Press. According to the article, Robertson walks about eight miles to work and around 13 miles when going home for five days per week.

The reason why a 56-year-old man walks to work for 21 miles is: buses don't cover the full distance between Robertson's Detroit home and his Rochester Hills job. After his story was told, The Guardian revealed it has promptly inspired the nation with some citizens helmed a fundraising campaign to raise money for a car and to pay his insurance.

Because the tale of a Detroit man who walks to work moved a lot of people, some of them even offered him a free ride while others offered to buy or give him cars. Meanwhile, CNN reported Robertson has been making the more than 20-mile journey from Detroit to Rochester Hills when his 1988 Honda Accord car gave up on him 10 years ago and when bus service was cut back.

Robertson has not only inspired people by his story but also with his determination to work. For more than 12 years, he has a perfect attendance in his job at the factory, which pays him $10.55 an hour, The Daily Mail reported.

Robertson's boss, 53-year-old Todd Wilson, who is the plant manager at Schain Mold & Engineering that specializes in high-end plastic moldings, said the factory's attendance standard was influenced by James.

"I set our attendance standard by this man," Wilson stated. "I say, if this man can get here, walking all those miles through snow and rain, well I'll tell you, I have people in Pontiac 10 minutes away and they say they can't get here - bull!"

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old Wayne State University student Evan Leedy started a GoFundMe site with a goal of raising $5,000 after reading the story of the Detroit man who walks 21 miles to work. And as of early Tuesday, it has reached a total of over $160,000 from almost 6,000 donors.
