Chicago Police Department Black Site - As human rights activists across the world continue to clamor for the closure of Guantanamo Bay and other US interrogation sites across the world, reports have emerged that the Chicago Police Department runs an off-the-book interrogation facility in the Homan Square neighborhood.
According to The Guardian, the Homan Square warehouse is usually reserved for terrorism cases. Nonetheless, reports indicate that suspects taken to Homan Square are illegally detained and beaten by the police during interrogation. Also, reports indicate that suspects taken to Homan Square are sometimes not listed in police booking records, therefore there is no way their lawyers can find them. Some of these suspects, who are minors, are reportedly held without access to the outside world for up to 24 hours.
At least one suspect held at the Homan Square detention facility died during interrogation. However, officials later ruled that his death was the result of heroin intoxication.
Brian Jacob Church, who was taken to the Homan Square after he was arrested during a NATO protest in 2012, described the facility as unusual. "It brings to mind the interrogation facilities they use in the Middle East. The CIA calls them black sites. It's a domestic black site. When you go in, no one knows what's happened to you."
The latest stories about Homan Square has put pressure on the Chicago Police Department to open up a bit more about what goes on in the old warehouse, which has several military vehicles parked in its compound.
The Chicago Police Department has since denied these accusations. In a statement the police aid interrogations at Homan Square are done according to all the "laws, rules and guidelines." The statement further noted that all persons held in the facility can be found in a public record and that contrary to claims lawyers are allowed to visit their clients in the facility.
