Apple To Revamp Its iPod Lineup

Apple is reportedly planning to revamp its old lineup of iPods next week. The Shuffle, Nano and Touch are scheduled for an update and re-release in a variety of shades. The Touch will also get better hardware and support in line with the Apple Music streaming service.

MacRumors discovered a lineup of six new colors for the Touch, Nano and Shuffle hidden within the iTunes resource files. Silver, space gray, red, bright pink, deep blue and light gold are said to be the new colors.

Digital Journal reported that Tuesday could be the unveiling of the new models. The source resource files of the latest iTunes version 12.2 shows images of the iPod in new exciting colors, which is taken as a sign that iPod is getting an update. The site also added that the iTunes images show the calendar icon on the Touch as displaying "Tuesday 14." The date makes the unveiling coincide with Apple Pay's launch in the UK.

It's not just the colors, PCTech said that the iPod Touch could get a 64-bit processor replacing the Touch's 32-bit processor, making the gadget faster. The Touch's five-megapixel camera, and 16, 32 and 64 gigabyte storage could also be upgraded.

Apple last updated the iPod Touch and iPod Nano in October 2012 and the iPod shuffle in September 2010. These changes mark a significant step in keeping the iPod in the game.

But will this overhaul excite users? Last year, The Verge made a report on the waning days of the iPod on the account of cannibalization from streaming services that also caused a decline in iPod sales. It further wrote that the lack of new iPods could certainly be responsible for the poor sales.

With this new attention that Apple has given the iPod, these portable media players are out to prove that they are not riding into the sunset yet.
