American boxer Andre Berto has reportedly been given the go signal to slug it out with Floyd Mayweather in September.
Berto (30-3), who has had a solid and impressive career as a welterweight and has been preferred to the likes of Britain's Amir Khan, who missed out on this opportunity.
Michael Woods of The Sweet Science reported that Mayweather will get paid around what has been guaranteed for every fight within his six-fight deal with Showtime, which will end after this fight, ranging from $30-35 million.
Woods added that since this is not pay-per-view, Mayweather will not get any pay-per-view royalties, and the extra dough will depend on sponsorships. In a way, it is also a gesture of giving back to fans who were disappointed by the lackluster MayPac event.
Rumors are also circulating that if Mayweather defeats Berto to notch up his victory to 49-0, his 50th fight has a chance to run on a network broadcast.
News.com said that this development puts an end to the buzz about Australia's Anthony Mundine pushing to have a chance at trading blows with the champ. Mundine published an open letter to Mayweather explaining why he was the best opponent.
Similarly, this also puts an end to Amir Khan's hopes of meeting Mayweather inside the ring. Khan, a devout Muslim, was determined to face the American champion.
Boxing News 24 said that Khan is coming to terms with the reality that Mayweather is not going to fight him ever. Khan was said to be upset about Mayweather passing him up for Berto or Mayfield.
Khan believes that he can give Mayweather more problems than what Pacquiao did last May. But Khan didn't maintain his handsome face after a bout with Chris Algieri, whom Pacquiao had walloped before.
Boxing News 24 suggested that Khan may want to re-evaluate and fight Alghieri again to redeem himself and perhaps Mayweather might give him a second look.
