Not even a full week of its release, "The Amazing Spider-Man" has swung into first place at the box office, raking in $140 million on its sixth day in theaters.
"The Amazing Spider-Man" is a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone, playing his love interest Gwen Stacy. According to CNN, the movie debuted at the top of the box office with $65 million over its first weekend. The 3D version played in 4,138 theaters and earned a $15,708 per theater average over the Friday-to-Sunday period. Of that $140 million, $14.3 million was derived from IMAX screens. Two weekends of international release, led to a whopping $341.2 million.
In second place is Seth Mac Farlane's comedy "Ted" which is at $32.6 million for its weekend total, with a 10-day total of $120.2 million.
Theaters welcomed Spider-Man in 2002 with Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi, and became 2002's third-highest grossing film. Spider-Man 2 was released in 2004, and Spider-Man 3 in 2007 which stand as the most successful film in the series.
"The Amazing Spider-Man," directed by Marc Webb, was released on July 3, and is a reboot of the comic book series. The unproduced Spider-Man 4 was originally meant to continue where the third installment left off, but due to disagreements between Sony and Raimi which caused him to leave the project, Sony was ultimately forced to cancel the film.
