Malware Computer Virus: Facebook Launches Security Checkpoint

In the past week, both Facebook and Google warned users of possible online access issues that could arise due to Malware infecting computers. Now Facebook is taking further steps in directing users who fear that their computers are infected, by guiding them onto sites where they can get antivirus software for free.

Facebook has a new Malware Checkpoint that allows users to sign up for Microsoft Security Essentials or McAfee Scan and Repair. Those using Macs will be sent to an Apple Security Updates site.

"Previously, if you suspected you may have malware installed on your device, you would either need to run anti-virus on your device or wait until Facebook identified an actionable threat," Facebook said in a note on its Security Page. "Now, with our new self-enrollment malware checkpoint, you will be able to proactively obtain your choice of a free anti-virus product to scan and clean your system."

Facebook will keep its notification system where it tells users when the site finds possible Malware infections on their devices. The social network will also continue to provide users free antivirus software to fix the problem.

Facebook began an anti-malware campaign as means of helping users protect their devices and their personal information.

"We hope that by making our technology available to more users, on demand, will help all the people who use our service keep their data and devices secure," Facebook said.

In 2001, Facebook updated its security features, improving its Login Approval features, warning users when they might possibly be effected by computer viruses, and improving its external blacklist system to block malicious sites.
