‘Castle’ Season 8 [SPOILERS ALERT!]: Kate Beckett’s Promotion To Drive A Wedge Between Her Relationship With Rick Castle? Bigger Conflicts Loom As Changes Shake Things Up In The Series

"Castle" Season 8 will surely deliver another intense chapter on the lives of crime-busting couple Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). And with the season 7 exit of Penny Johnson Jerald, who plays Captain Victoria Gates, more twists are expected to shock the avid viewers of the hit ABC series.

While Gates' departure left many fans baffled, it meant that a promotion for Beckett was underway. However, the move will reportedly shake things up in "Castle" Season 8 as it premieres this fall. According to Inquisitr, Beckett might run for office. But as of the moment, the homicide detective and first-class investigator will remain in the precinct.

During the Television Critics Association's (TCA) semi-annial press tour earlier this week, showrunner Alexi Hawley revealed that Beckett will become the next captain in "Castle" Season 8. However, it will cause some conflicts especially with his relationship with Rick.

"The important thing to say about [Rick and Kate] is that the show has always been and will always be about their love affair," Hawley told TVLine. "But we're looking to add some drama to it, some spark to it. We're going to have fun. It's going to be emotional at times, it will be romantic... It will be everything."

Showrunner Terrence Paul Winter, on the other hand, hinted that Beckett's decision could impact the dynamics of the entire season of "Castle" Season 8, Design & Trend noted.

"She had three choices: go one way, go the other way, or just stay as-is, and she's going to make a choice that's going to change the dynamic of the show," Winter told TV Guide.

As bigger conflicts loom following the changes in the upcoming season of the series, Beckett will struggle to play by the rules as being the precinct's new boss. While Castle will find himself working more with Hayley Shipton (Toks Olagundoye), Entertainment Weekly has learned. But Hawley reiterated that Shipton won't come between Castle and Beckett's love affair.

"For us, her character was never meant to be competition," Hawley said. "She's a strong, powerful, beautiful, independent woman and she adds a flavor of that into the show, but is not - in any way shape or form - competition for Beckett."

Another big change to watch out for in "Castle" Season 8 is Rick's daughter, Alexis (Molly C. Quinn), who will grow up a big way and may have a "little sex in the city" thing in the show.

Meanwhile, watch out for "Castle" Season 8 as it debut on ABC on Sept. 21.
