Postpartum Depression Taking Its Toll On Celebrity Moms? 5 Hollywood Stars Reveal PPD Battle

Postpartum depression (PPD) has been currently making headlines after famous celebrity moms opened up about their experiences battling PPD. The most recent celeb mom who revealed her postpartum depression battle is 26-year-old Hayden Panetierre, who recently sought professional help at a treatment center.

Since last December, Hayden Panettiere has been very candid about her struggle since the birth of her daughter Kaya Evodokia with fiancé and professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko, People noted. But this time, she finally decided to seek professional help.

"Hayden Panetierre is voluntarily seeking professional help at a treatment center as she is currently battling postpartum depression," her rep said. "She asks that the media respect her privacy during this time."

Panetierre, however, is not alone in her battle with postpartum depression. In fact, other celeb moms have also shared their PPD experience. But before we reveal more Hollywood stars, we'll first give the definition of PPD. According to Mayo Clinic, PPD is not a character flaw or weakness. It is just brought by the powerful emotions triggered after childbirth. These emotions can be joy, excitement, fear, anxiety or depression.

So, here are 5 celebrity moms who have battled a PPD ordeal.

1. Brooke Shields

Shields revealed her PPD struggle after giving birth to her daughter Rowan in 2003, Popsugar noted.

"We think and we feel that we should just be able to handle it on our own..." she said. "I finally had a healthy beautiful baby girl and I couldn't look at her. I couldn't hold her and I couldn't sing to her and I couldn't smile at her... All I wanted to do was disappear and die."

2. Gwyneth Paltrow

While giving birth to her first child Apple was flawless, the award-winning actress revealed she suffered postpartum depression after welcoming son Moses, with her ex-husband Chris Martin, Us Weekly revealed.

"At my lowest, I was a robot. I just didn't feel anything," she shared. "I had no maternal instincts for him - it was awful. I couldn't connect, and still, when I look at pictures of him at 3 months old, I don't remember that time."

3. Bryce Dallas Howard

The former "Twilight Saga" actress spoke about her PPD struggle in Paltrow's newsletter GOOP, Heath.com noted.

"It is strange for me to recall what I was like at that time. I seemed to be suffering emotional amnesia," she described. "I couldn't genuinely cry, or laugh, or be moved by anything. For the sake of those around me, including my son, I pretended, but when I began showering again in the second week, I let loose in the privacy of the bathroom, water flowing over me as I heaved uncontrollable sobs. Worst of all, I definitely felt I was a rotten mother - not a bad one, a rotten one. Because the truth was, every time I looked at my son, I wanted to disappear."

4. Lisa Rinna

"RHOBH" star has experienced postpartum depression not just once but twice after the birth of her two daughters. At that time, CBS News revealed that she feared PPD would push her to murder her family.

"I had visions of knives and guns," she said. "I made Harry (husband Harry Hamlin) hide all the sharp knives and take the gun out of the house because I had visions of killing everybody. Now how horrific is that?"

5. Celine Dion

The Canadian songstress suffered postpartum depression after she gave birth to her twins in 2010, Today's Parent reported.

"One moment, tremendous happiness; the next, fatigue sets in, and I cried for no reason, and then that took care of itself, Dion said. "It's for things like that after having a baby that mothers really need emotional support."
