UK Prime Minister: 'Fast Internet Is A Right, Promised Its Availability To All By 2020'

There are parts in UK that already have fast internet connections, especially within the business sectors. However, the majority is not enjoying this kind of accessibility yet. In fact, many just feel very frustrated when they go online and the connection is slow.

Now, Prime Minister David Cameron is about to solve this problem with a promise of speedy broadband by the year 2020. And the best part is, he wants everyone to have access in it without shelling out a lot of money.

As per the report of Daily Mail, the British PM laid out the plans of providing everyone in the region with stable and fast internet. In addition, Cameron declared that being able to obtain a speedy connection is now a legal right. This means, homes all over Britain, even the really remote ones, can demand to have such good service.

"Access to the internet shouldn't be a luxury; it should be a right - absolutely fundamental to life in 21st century Britain. That is why I'm announcing a giant leap in my digital mission for Britain," Mr. Cameron stated.

The Prime Minister went on to say, "Just as our forebears effectively brought gas, electricity and water to all, we're going to bring fast broadband to every home and business that wants it."

"That's right! we're getting Britain — all of Britain — online, and on the way to becoming the most prosperous economy in the whole of Europe," he added.

Furthermore, before the end of his term, Mr. Cameron said that he would make sure that all internet providers and broadband suppliers would follow the Universal Service Obligation which he would impose. With this regulation, all the service providers would be forced to deliver cheaper internet at the speed of 10Mbps at the very least.

In Britain, the goal to extend the broadband service to all UK residents by 2020 is actually very achievable. BBC News mentioned that by next month, it is expected that an additional 3.5 million homes and businesses would benefit from faster access to the internet. Then, by the last quarter of 2017, if this program continues to go smoothly, 95 percent of the nation would already have speedy connections.

"Coverage has already reached more than 83% of United Kingdom homes and businesses," John Whittingdale, UK's Culture secretary said.

Meanwhile, based on the report of Ofcom, the communications regulator in Britain, the Internet speed in United Kingdom today is at 22.8 Mbit/s.
