El Chapo the Cartel kingpin's Wife Says That's Not the 'El Chapo' She Knows

The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, Emma Coronel Aispurol, 26 sees a different version of her husband and it certainly is far from how the world sees him today. Coronel, a former beauty queen who married El Chapo on her 18th birthday has never spoken publicly about her eight years of marriage to a man who has headed one of the world's most violent criminal organizations, responsible for much of the marijuana, heroin, methamphetamines and murder produced in Mexico.

Her husband, she says, calls her his "queen." "He is like any other man - of course, he is not violent, not rude," says Coronel, who insists she has never seen her husband act violently or take drugs. "I have never heard him say a bad word. I have never seen him get excited or be upset at anyone."

In the  first ever  Telemundo exclusive  interview  between Coronel Aispuro and Mexican journalist Anabel Hernández, the former beauty queen said her husband was being "slowly tortured" in prison and was suffering from dangerously high blood pressure. Visitation rights were cut off since he was recaptured on January 8 this year.

Coronel Aispuro questioned the conditions her husband is living in at the Antiplano prison, claiming the Mexican government is responsible for El Chapo's health.

"They want to make him pay for his escape. They say that they are not punishing him. Of course, they are. They are there with him, watching him in his cell," Coronel says. "They are right there, all day long, calling attendance. They don't let him sleep. He has no privacy, not even to go to the restroom." "I'm afraid for his life" added Coronel.

The exclusive Telemundo interview between Coronel Aispuro and Mexican journalist Anabel Hernández aired last Sunday February 21 at 7 p.m. ET on Telemundo, in a news special titled "The Queen of El Chapo.
