Periscope Catching Up With Facebook Live – Tables Are Turning

Periscope of Twitter rolled out a new feature on Thursday that will allow the saving of video clips in a mobile device's camera roll. Some believe it will be one of the key functions of the app.

With this latest feature, you can now save replays of your broadcasts permanently by just typing "#Save" in the title, and you have the option to delete them later. As of the moment, video clips on the app automatically disappear after 24 hours.

This is the feature that Periscope doesn't have in order to effectively compete with other video and broadcasting services such as Facebook Live and prevented it from catering to frequent users like product brands, celebrities, and public figures.

Periscope co-founder Beykpour helped in popularizing the concept of broadcasting from your smartphone. He started it with his childhood friend Joe Bernstein when they launched their live mobile-video app last year. The app quickly collected 10 million users. They later announced in March that their video broadcast have now reached 200 million.

Meanwhile, Facebook has recently launched its own live video streaming service to all of its 1.6 billion members. Zuckerberg's company claims its Live is the fastest-growing product ever.

Periscope with only millions of users is like David to Goliath of Facebook Live with billions, but Beykpour seems undaunted by its behemoth rival.

"Build a product people love to use," Beykpur said in an interview at Twitter headquarters.

"Competition is good, but we don't let it distract us. You don't want to get into a mode where your product development is based on them," he added.

With the #Save feature, average users and even content creators will be more inclined to use Periscope in sending, sharing and saving video broadcasts. There are also options for permanent replays and broadcasting a video that you want to delete after its 24-hour window is over.
