A high school 10th grade English teacher Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst was just arrested after giving birth to her student's baby on June 18.
The child's grandmother reported the crime to the police after discovering her illegal sexual relationship with the 17-year-old father.
"One thing led to another, and he ended up at her residence, and it’s been going on, going for approximately one year now. She was open with her pregnancy. I don’t know what her story was to everybody else, but it was an open pregnancy. The school district knew about it."
The student involved in the unlawful sexual intercourse was just 16 years old at the time of the baby's conception according to officials.
Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst had taught English and worked in career center for the Citrus Valley High School, also working as an assistant coach on the varsity girls soccer team.
The South Carolinian teacher was arrested at her home around 8:45pm Monday. Whitehurst was released that night after giving $25,000 in bail and will be expected to attend a preliminary hearing between 45 to 90 days according to police.
Laura Whitehurst has been placed on administrative leave due to the unlawful conduct, and has been banned from school grounds.
Whitehurst's father has worked as a principal of Brywn Mawr Elementary School and Moore Middle School, also located in the Redlands, according to PE.com.
"Convicted sex offenders tell us that 'Parents are so naïve - they're worried about strangers and should be worried about their brother-in-law. They just don't realize how devious we can be. Know that we will use any way we can to get to children.'" says Laura A. Ahearn.
Statistics say that most child sexual abuse, up to 90%, occurs between the minor and someone that the minor has an established and trusting relationship with. The crime does not happen between the child and a stranger, but with someone much closer.
