Screen Time Guidelines For Children Released

The American Academy of Pediatrics released guidelines on the amount of screen time a child should have.

Researchers found out that there are a lot of benefits children and teenagers can get from media exposure. They can learn new information on the internet.

However, there are still negative effects from too much media exposure. They can gain weight and loss sleep,

The researchers created this so parents could keep up with the digital era we live in today. The guideline has recommendations for every age group, Science Daily reported.

The researchers advise that children below 24 months to avoid digital media. Video-chatting in facetime or skype is advised.

However, digital media can be introduced from 18 to 24 months. Parents are encouraged to allow children with adult supervision.

Children around 2 to 5 years old should be allowed an hour a day of screen time. It is highly encouraged to watch TV with your children to guide them on what they're watching.

Put your foot forward, tell your kids they can't have screen time an hour before bedtime. Meal times, bed time and play time with parents should be screen-free not just for your kids but for the parents to, Common Sense Media reported.

The researchers said not use screen time to soothe kids. Bribing kids with extended screen time will not help your kid in regulating their own emotions.

Monitor the apps and TV shows the child is watching, avoid exposing the kid to violent contents. They encourage parents to test apps before letting the child use the phone.

The researchers believe that parents should place limits on the hour and media that their children use for a day.  Babysitters must be aware about the rules set for the kid.

Parents should also let their children know about the dangers of media like cyberbullying, sexting, solicitations and compromising privacy. Researchers believe that it will help parents to have trusted adults who will educate their children online.
