'Hacksaw Ridge' Is Another Masterpiece; Marks Mel Gibson's Hollywood Comeback

Mel Gibson finally is able to stage a comeback to the limelight by directing the moving film 'Hacksaw Ridge,' a movie revolving around the true story of Desmond Doss played by British actor Andrew Garfield.

It is difficult to forget how his anti-Semitic rant and arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol took a huge toll on his career, but as it turns out a movie was what's needed to redeem him, and a good one at that. It has been a decade since the unfortunate turn of events ensued, yet now Gibson appears to rise above it all.

According to New York Daily News, 'Hacksaw Ridge' talks about healing, which is exactly what the film is doing to the actor turned director's reputation.

The World War II drama illustrates how the army medic Desmond Doss rose above being labeled as a conscientious objector and called himself a "cooperator" instead while saving around 75 of his comrades during the Battle of Okinawa. Desmond was at the top of his class in boot camp, yet his refusal to take up arms created a rift among his colleagues and commanding officers. It wasn't until the incident when he proved how he could serve his country without using violence that he was better understood, thus awarded the Medal of Honor.

In a review written in USA Today, the movie takes into account the undeniable workmanship of both Andrew Garfield and Vince Vaughn, as well as the vision of Mel Gibson as seen in the way he directed the film.Coupled with the incredible story of Doss, it was a surefire hit that would certainly strike a chord especially with the divisiveness everyone is experiencing today, as was pointed out by Garfield during his guesting on Jimmy Kimmel's show.

Aside from the points enumerated, what makes the film great is Gibson's ability to take the appeal of "The Passion of the Christ" which drew the religious communities' attention and combine it with the authentic violence depicted in "Saving Private Ryan," the New York Daily News adds.

With these elements, 'Hacksaw Ridge' truly signals Mel Gibson's comeback to be one of the renowned personalities in Hollywood once more.
