The Robinson statue standing arm-in-arm with teammate Pee Wee Reese had markings all over its metallic area, which was easily removed. The vandalisms in its stone pedestal, though couldn't be cleaned up as the markings were all over the stone pedestal. Brooklyn Cyclone's spokesman Bill Harner explains that they had to cover the defiled area with a cardboard, just before the 11 AM game.
He tells, "It is both heartbreaking and deeply disturbing that this statue, which is the symbol of equality and tolerance, has been defaced in such an offensive and hateful way," he states. Until now, authorities have no leads or suspects yet. They are ruling the incident as a hate crime.
Jack Robinson was the first black player of the Major League Baseball in the modern era (1947). Before a game in Cincinnati, Reese's gesture became iconic, as he was accepting African American baseball players since the sport was known to be segregated before. The ballpark's manager shares, "Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese embody the humanity and inclusiveness that make our borough, city and country great."
New York Senator Chuck Schumer shares his sentiment with the authorities and the people of MCU saying, "Defacing the Jackie Robinson statue is a dagger in the heart to everything America stands for, and I hope those who are responsible are caught, punished and taught why what they did is so disgusting and offensive."
Despite the statue being defaced, people are looking forward to having the markings removed as soon as possible. "We are optimistic that we will be able to remove all of the writing," Harner said.
