The remains of 16-year-old girl South Carolina resident Gabbiee Swaison who went missing August of 2012 has been found, police say. The suspect Freddie Grant, who cut a deal with the police led the group to where Swainson's body was. They walked towards a wooded area in Elgin, South Carolina where Grant buried the young girl's remains the year before.
Sheriff Leon Lott, Richland County's Sheriff expressed deep sadness and remorse for not bringing home Gabbiee alive to her family.
"It's not the way we'd have liked this to have ended. We'd have liked to have found Gabbiee and brought her home to her momma," the sheriff told the Examiner.
Investigators flew to Kentucky to get Grant from a federal penitentiary bringing the man back to Elgin. Lott told reporters, "He's taken us there. He's told us. He's showed us."
Reports from last year said that Grant, Gabbiee Swaison's mother's ex-boyfriend is the main suspect, while Grant's daughter Dominique is an accessory to the crime. Authorities found that Grant's daughter concealed evidence by getting rid of Gabbiee's mobile phone. The police used Dominique Grant's potential jail time so that they can make a deal with the suspect.
Last year, Grant even joined the Swaisons in looking for Gabbiee while Elvia Swaison, Gabbiee's mother had no idea that it was Grant who abducted her daughter.
Police say that Grant has no motive in killing the 16-year-old. In April of 2013, the police searched Grant's home and found ammunition. Now that the remains of Gabbiee has been found, Grant will be facing charges for kidnapping and murder. He will be staying longer in prison, police say. Grant is currently serving 212 months in prison for illegal possession of ammunition.
Following the discovery of the Gabbiee's body, a prayer vigil will be held on August 18th to remember the young girl. It will be held at the Right Direction Church International, Columbia Campus, 6 p.m. according to the Facebook page for Swainson.
