'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story:' 'Monsters,' 'Godzilla' References Sneakily Inserted; Cinema Date Dropped!

Now famous for "Godzilla" and "Monsters", British Director Gareth Edwards is at the helm for the highly anticipated stand-alone "Star Wars" film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Fans of his work within his production team mentioned that one location in the movie contains references about the renowned director's earlier Hollywood works.

According to CinemaBlend.com, in an interview, Edwards said that some paintings in Saw Gerrera's cave -- a primary location and early destination for the character -- contain a drawing of the monster in his movie "Monsters". Other parts of the cave include reference to "Godzilla" including the eponymous monster and his adversaries, the "MUTOs."

Gareth Edwards rose to international fame after his publisher revealed that his groundbreaking work "Monsters" only had about $500,000 for a shooting budget. According to NoFilmSchool.com, Edwards' resourcefulness had him shoot the entire film using a small camera. In one interview, Edwards mentioned he made all the post-processing -- including the monster's computer graphics -- himself.

Riz Ahmed, playing as Bodhi Rook and part of the mercenary squad that has no lightsabers, praised Gareth Edwards for making the movie feel like a "war movie." He mentioned that Edwards -- along with Producer Kathy Kennedy -- created a world that has a balance between the old and new Star Wars.

One good reason to watch "Rogue One" on December 16, 2016 is not because Darth Vader makes an appearance or the characters are appealing. It would be because the movie will reveal the iconic Death Star's early design origin and the necessity for the Galactic Empire to build it.

Another reason is the lack of lightsaber battles. The iconic weapon makes things for both Jedi and Sith easy. The animated "Star Wars:  The Clone Wars" -- a CGI cartoon series set between Episode I and II -- and the PC game "Star Wars: Republic Commando" are both "Star Wars" universe stories that focuses on the struggles of non-Jedi or Sith characters.
