‘True Detective’ Season 3 News, Air Date, And Spoilers: Matthew McConaughey Is Willing To Return For Another Season; Season 3 Likely To Premiere In 2018

Matthew McConaughey is all for giving “True Detective” another try as the actor recently said that he is open to returning for season 3. In a recent interview, the “Reign of Fire” star said that he has talked to show creator Nic Pizzolatto about a new installment.

McConaughey appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show” (via Entertainment Weekly) on Friday, and the star talked about his role as Rust Cohle in “True Detective.” When asked about a possible third season, the actor said, “I’ve talked to the creator, Nic Pizzolatto, who’s taking a break from it.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Pizzolatto is developing a new HBO series and is teaming up with Robert Downey Jr. for the upcoming project. According to Variety, sources said that the show is based on the “Iron Man” star’s “Perry Mason” reboot.

McConaughey told Eisen that he has been getting all sorts of questions about “True Detective” season 3.

“I hear that all the time now,” said the “Magic Mike” actor. “’You said you were going to do season 3. When is it coming?’”

It appears that fans have not abandoned all hope for “True Detective” season 3 even though the show’s second installment was panned by critics due to its muddled storyline. Though season 2 featured a stellar cast made up of Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams, the season proved to be a disaster due to the plot’s lack of cohesiveness.

The actor said that if “True Detective” season 3 was written well and if conversations about it would come up among the involved parties, then he would definitely return as Rust Cohle.

“Oh, I’m open to it for sure,” said McConaughey.

If plans for “True Detective” season 3 push through, then it’s likely that the show could return for a 2018 premiere. This is due to the fact that most of HBO’s original programs are coming back for new seasons next year, which include “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” “The Leftovers,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Ballers.” The network will also be debuting new series such as “Young Pope,” “Big Little Lies,” “The Deuce,” “Barry,” “Room 104,” and “Crashing.”
