'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Drops 67% In Box Office

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” dropped by 67.9% in box office earnings on Friday. It is likely to pick up again after Christmas day.

Opening with $71 million in the box office, the standalone "Star Wars" installment, which comes as the eighth film in the franchise, earned $22.775 million on Friday, Dec. 23, reports Forbes. That is less than half of its opening score.

Given that it was approaching Christmas Eve, it is understandable for the figures to go that low. Scott Mendelson from Forbes and Dave McNary from Variety both predict the earnings to rise again on Monday and the days following.

Mendelson theorizes a $68 million for the second weekend and $325 million for its first 11 days. According to McNary, this "Star Wars" film is 42% paces behind “The Force Awakens,” which had $571 million in its 11-day total.

The Forbes article states that the blockbuster’s eight-day total stands at $244.774 million domestic, landing a spot between Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” at $242 million and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” at $253 million. It may even become the seventh biggest hit of 2016 if it crosses $330.37 million on Tuesday, Dec. 27, surpassing “Batman v Superman” at $330.36 million.

The film received positive reviews from both fans and critics at Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 89% on the Audience Score and 85% on the Tomatometer. According to the review, it draws on the franchise’s mythology while succeeding in breaking a new narrative as well as an aesthetic ground, making further films a very likely scenario.

“Star Wars: A Rogue One Story” is a prequel in the franchise and stars Riz Ahmed, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, and Donnie Yen. It is set before "Episode IV: A New Hope" and you can catch it in theaters now.
