Cassidy Campbell Makes A Statement: California Teen Crowned As First Transgendered Homecoming Queen [VIDEO & REPORT]

Cassidy Lynn Campbell couldn't help but sob into tears Friday night as she was being crowned homecoming queen, The Los Angeles Times reported Sept. 20.

In an event described as one of a kind, Cassidy Campbell was named as her school's homecoming queen, making her the first transgendered teen to win the title.

A senior at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Cassidy was born male but claimed that she always felt and knew that she was a girl. She began to undergo hormone therapy in high school, which required her to take in hormone blockers and estrogen injections as prescribed by her endocrinologist, in her transition from being a boy to a real girl.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Cassidy decided to run for homecoming queen this year to make a statement.

"If I win it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was," the 16-year-old transgendered teen said before the election. "But with all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me. I'm doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."

According to Yahoo! News, Cassidy was catapulted into national popularity, when she reportedly joined the contest.

Just this Friday, at Marina High's homecoming pep rally, the string of 10 candidates was decreased into five, and Cassidy was included in the final five.

School District Spokesman Tom Delapp said the five finalists were called up at halftime and balloons were released from a box, announcing the winner - white for the princesses and blue and bright yellow for the queen.

"She was stunned. She kind of broke down on the podium," Delapp said. "She was shocked. She cried a lot."

As students began to chant her name and rand down to where she was standing to give her a hug, Cassidy broke into tears.

"I am so proud to win this not just for me, but everyone out there," the 16-year-old transgendered teen said while receiving the award.

"I think it really shows the progression of the times," she told the reporters afterwards.

Meanwhile, the administrators of her school received positive feedback during Cassidy's campaign prior to her triumph.

"If Marina High School is to make high-profile news during its homecoming week this year," Marina High School Principal Paul Morrow said in a statement. "then we are proud that the message is one of equity and individual respect."
