It's no secret that the economy is still recovering and that the job market is in a strange flux. Luckily the economy has recovered faster than many thought. It is now over 90 percent of where it was in March 2020. Yet more than two-thirds of people who were on unemployment benefits were making more money than they were at their old jobs.

This has created a unique situation in the job market. While customer service and hospitality jobs have been impacted, no field has been affected more than medicine. Health care companies are always in need of skilled workers, but they are now more than ever. If you're hiring for new positions in 2021 and beyond, here are a few tips to find the right candidates.

Run Background Checks

An overlooked but extremely vital step in the hiring process are background checks. Whoever you are hiring, you should run a background check for employment. Background checks don't just provide you information about the person's criminal history, they offer verification of their education and employment history as well. They provide information on past names and addresses. In short, you will be able to determine if the person you are interviewing has been honest with you. It's a great way to narrow down employees at the beginning of the hiring process as well as to verify them at the end.

New Graduates

While it depends on the position you are hiring for, if it is an entry-level job you should keep new graduates in mind. In May of 2021 almost half of the people who graduated from college in 2020 were still looking for jobs. 2021 graduates have joined them. With thousands of newly graduated students looking for work, there are a lot of benefits to hiring them. Not only will new graduates work for less, they will come motivated to get the job done, grow, and make more money in the future. They will come with no bad training or bad habits. You will get to mold them into the employee you want who can grow with the business. A lot of companies are hesitant to hire new graduates because they lack experience, but if you provide incentive and training they can be a great option.

Utilize Social Media

Social media is a great way to get out the word that you are hiring for specific positions. It can also be used to check on the character of the person. LinkedIn connects companies with workers and vice versa. Career sites have become more and more like social media, using algorithms to place the right candidate with the business that suits them. It doesn't matter whether you're a candidate or a company, it is absolutely imperative to utilize social media to look for the right match.

Create a Referral Program

When you have reputable employees you work with who you trust, it's a great idea to create a referral program. Not only will you get to tap into their network, you can create a leadership chain where promoted employees can train people they already are familiar with. While it's of course necessary to keep up on the Human Resources of hiring people employees already know, it can create a close knit team that trusts each other. Do you have employees who have grown with the company that you fully back? Ask for their input on hiring new employees for specific jobs.

Whether you're an employer looking to hire new health care workers or a candidate who is looking for a job in the industry, you should use everything at your disposal to find the right match. It's also important not to wait too long. With so many people staying unemployed because they're making more money, the longer you wait the more competition there will be and the harder it will be to secure the ideal position.

With the economy growing and jobs still needing to be filled, when companies find the right employees, we all benefit. Not only will the worker grow with the business, the economy will begin to thrive once again. It won't take long, but have patience. Soon the economy will go back to pre-pandemic levels and life will begin to feel normal once again.
