Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, otherwise know as Lady Gaga is no stranger to baring flesh in her videos and promotional album art. She took things one step further by stripping down fully nude onstage Saturday night at the London nightclub G-A-Y.
She shed her billowing white gown while singing the song "Venus" from her new album "Artpop". The 27 year old pop singer, featured her bare bum on the cover of her single "Do What You Want", which seems like it would have been a more fitting anthem for her knicker dropping surprise performance. She had an appearance on the show "X-factor" the following evening, which saw her only wearing slightly more clothes. It began with her in a blond wig with choreography creating a mock version Botticelli's the Birth of Venus. She then played piano in a flesh toned outfit to make herself appear nude. She later jumped off the stage and hugged Sharon Osborne in her bra and panties. This might have been perhaps a stab, at Sharon's daughter Kelly, who Gaga had been in a media feud with.
Gaga had been spotted earlier in the evening in London wearing a bizarre pair of steampunk inspired glasses. Many patron's described her attire onstage as looking like a ghost, so it is unclear from first hand accounts if this was this was Lady Gaga attempt to cosplay as Lady Godiva for Halloween.
Matt Lucas star of the show Little Britain was at the gig and reported while the strip down was impressive the patrons were going to live up to the clubs name and stay gay. Which gives more credibility to Gaga's claim that she did this as an artistic statement to feel free, rather than anything sexual. If she wanted to get a rise out of an all male crowd there would have been more suitable demographic for her to choose from. So perhaps she felt safer and more comfortable in an environment where she could embrace exhibitionist desires without feeling overly sexualized in public.
Where American clubs, gay or straight might not be as welcoming to such a display off full frontal lady parts, the club owner Jeremy Joseph was honored rather than outraged and even tweeted his thanks to the artist. So now if Gaga feels the need to be further inspired by going a more natural route she knows a stage that will welcome this expression. It will be even more shocking when Gaga decides to perform some where in her street clothes ,sans autotune and backing tracks .
