One World Trade Center official and final height is 1,776 feet turning it into the tallest building in the U.S., the Height Committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reported on Tuesday.
Even though One World Trade Center is still unfinished and has not yet received its certificate of occupancy until next year it opens, its height is no longer in dispute defeating long-entitled Chicago's Willis Tower becoming the third largest building in the world.
"We were very satisfied with the detailed information presented by the team, in particular, that which affirmed that the structure on top of the building is meant as a permanent architectural feature, not a piece of functional-technical equipment," said Timothy Johnson, Chairman of CTBUH and Design Partner at NBBJ.
The design height of the One World Trade Center was set at 1,776 feet to commemorate the year of the Declaration of Independence of the United States from Great Britain and to reafirm the principles of the nation's founding in "the face of attacks that destroyed the original World Trade Center tower on Sept. 11, 2001".
One World Trade Center will be the third-tallest building in the world upon completion, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai with 2,717 feet, and the Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with 1,972 feet.
