Ohio Couple Returns Adopted Son of Nine Years: Should They Be Put Behind Bars?

An Ohio couple recently chose to give up their parenting rights to their adopted child, who has been with them for nine years now.

According to Yahoo Shine, the Ohio couple, Cleveland and Liza Cox, returned their adopted son to the orphanage where he got him as an infant.

They adopted the child through Butler County Children Services when he was still an infant, but decided to send him back there just this October, claiming that the boy has "aggressive behavior" issues, adding that the boy refused treatment, the Associated Press reported.

Now, the parents are facing charges of reckless abandonment by Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser.

"I want to provide as much deterrent as I can for parents who think, 'Oh, I'm honked off at my child; I can just abandon him,'" Gmoser said in an interview for Yahoo Shine. "After reviewing [the parents'] financial and psychological abilities, I couldn't wrap my brain around any defenses people in these circumstances could have about wanting to give back a child."

The 9-year-old boy is now under protective custody awaiting the outcome of the grand jury trial, which will move to resolve whether his parents will get away with abandoning him for good and if they are to face up to six months of prison and a fine of $1,000 out of the misdemeanor.

Adolf Olivas, the boy's court-appointed attorney, said that right now the boy is still hurt and confused of the situation. "If your 9-year-old needs help, you get him help," Olivas said. "It is not a question of a 9-year-old wanting it or not."

It can be noted that a similar case happened early this year when a Tennessee woman sent her adopted 7-year-old back to Russia on an airplane alone. The case sparked outrage among Russian citizens, and the woman was later on ordered to pay child support.
