Successive Russian suicide bombings leaves more than 30 dead, 80 injured

Russian suicide bombings - 14 more people were killed in the latest of a string of suicide bombings in Volgograd, Russia on Monday, December 30.
The suicide bomber targeted a electric trolleybus in Volgograd this time, leaving 14 more people dead, in addition to the 17 who were killed on Sunday in an explosion that destroyed one of the city's main railway stations.

The electric bus had been packed with people due to the Monday morning rush hour during the time of the explosion. Authorities had come to the conclusion that the sucide bomber this time was part of the same group that caused the blast at the railway station just one day earlier.

The successive suicide bombings have killed more than 30 people in all, putting Volgograd on edge for future attacks and emphasizing the terrorist threat amid preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The increased guards and soldiers deployed for the Sochi Games in February 2014 would make it difficult for suicide bombers to sneak in and compromise the event but the successive blasts have shown authorities that they can target civilians everywhere else in Russia easily.

Located around 650 kilometers northeast of Sochi, Volgograd serves as an important transport hub for the southern Russia area, with numerous public transport routes connecting it to unsafe provinces in North Caucasus which rebels have reportedly made their hideout.

Investigative agency spokesman Vladimir Markin confirmed that today's explosion was caused by a bomb similar to the one that had caused the blast at the main railway station on Sunday.

"That confirms the investigators' version that the two terror attacks were linked," Markin shared in an official statement. "They could have been prepared in one place."

Markin also confirmed in the statement that a suicide bomber had caused the explosion in the trolleybus, contradicting an earlier statement where he said that the explosion was due to a bomb hidden in the vehicle's passenger seats.

At least 14 people have been left dead by the blast and around 30 more were wounded, confirmed public health officials.
