Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington to reprise roles in 'Avatar' sequels; First sequel to debut in Dec. 2016

Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will be taking fans on another wild adventure in Pandora as the two stars have signed on for three more sequels to the James Cameron blockbuster, "Avatar," announced late Tuesday.

Director James Cameron has especially asked the two stars to continue their roles, lavishing praise for Saldana and Worthington's acting chops.
"(Worthington's) Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor," James Cameron explained in an official statement. "Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength."

The director had equally high praise for "Colombiana" star Zoe Saldana, saying, "Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they'll be returning with us to Pandora."

The pair will be joined by another veteran from the highest-grossing movie in history. Despite the fact that Stephen Lang's villainous character died at the ending of the first "Avatar" movie, it did not seem to have stopped the director from writing Lang in for the second, third and fourth installments of the hit film franchise.

James Cameron aslso gathered an all-star team of genre screenplay writers to help in the project, including Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes"),Josh Friedman ("War of the Worlds") and Shane Salerno ("Savages").

The real stars of the film however will be the special effects team working behind the scenes.

The Avatar director recently said in an interview with The Associated Press that a group of software developers has been working on an even more elaborate and impressive visual feat that the 3-D original movie that amassed US$2.8 billion worldwide.

"It's going to be a lot of new imagery, and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora," Cameron told reporters. "We're blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean, the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it."

Filming for the second movie is set to begin in New Zealand, with Avatar 2 due to hit the big screen in December 2016, the third in December 2017 and the last installment in December 2018.
